Electric dipole

Also called Dipole

An electric dipole is a pair of equal and opposite point charges held a fixed distance apart. Its net charge is zero, yet it still produces an electric field, and that field weakens with distance faster than a single charge's field does.

Useful term, and a term the AP courses do not use. The word dipole appears in the four current CEDs only in the magnetism units, as a magnetic dipole: AP Physics 2 EK 12.1.A.1.i and EK 12.1.B.4, with the same statements in C: E&M. The phrase "electric dipole" is in none of them.

The configuration is still examinable. AP Physics 2 caps field and potential calculations at four or fewer point charges, so two equal and opposite charges sits well inside the limit, and a CED sample activity has students sketch field vector diagrams and potential isolines for arrangements of two or three charges of various signs. You will meet the object described as two charges rather than by name.

The result worth carrying into the exam room. On the perpendicular bisector of the pair, the electric potential is zero everywhere, because potential superposes as signed scalars and +q+q and q-q at equal distances cancel. The electric field there is not zero: it superposes as vectors, the two contributions have components that add rather than cancel, and it points from the positive charge toward the negative one. A point where V=0V = 0 while E0\vec{E} \neq 0 is a clean way to test whether you know which quantity is a scalar.

Beyond the course: far from the pair the field falls off as 1/r31/r^3 rather than 1/r21/r^2, because the two charges nearly cancel. No AP question asks for that exponent.
