Position
Also called Position vector
Position is where an object is, measured as a vector from a chosen origin. It is the quantity every other kinematic quantity is built from: displacement is a change in position, and velocity is the rate at which position changes.
Symbol along one axis, for the vertical, and in two or three dimensions. The SI unit is the meter, and the AP equation sheet's symbol list gives = position and = vertical position.
It is a vector, and students routinely file it as a scalar. AP Physics 1 EK 1.1.A.3 puts position on the vector side alongside displacement, velocity and acceleration, with distance and speed on the scalar side. In one dimension the sign is the direction, so m is a complete statement once you have said which way is positive.
Nothing has a position until you place an origin. Move the origin and every position number changes, while every displacement stays the same, because cancels the offset. EK 1.4.A.1 generalizes the point: the choice of reference frame determines the direction and magnitude of the quantities an observer measures.
Everything else derives from it. EK 1.2.A.2 defines displacement as the change in an object's position. EK 1.3.A.4.i defines instantaneous velocity as the rate of change of position, read as the slope of a tangent to a position-versus-time graph. The kinematic equation the sheet prints, , returns a position rather than a distance traveled.
