Motion Map
Also called Motion diagram
A motion map is a representation that shows where a moving object is at a sequence of equally spaced instants, usually with arrows for velocity and sometimes acceleration. AP Physics names it as a representation students should be able to create.
The name is College Board's. Motion maps sit on the list of representations frequently used in AP Physics 1, in the appendix Vocabulary and Definitions of Important Ideas in AP Physics, and appear again in the Science Practice 1 discussion, alongside pictures, free-body diagrams, force diagrams, graphs, energy bar charts and momentum charts. Both Physics C course descriptions carry motion maps on their lists as well. The AP Physics 2 list does not.
What the CED requires of it. EK 1.3.A.1 says motion can be represented by motion diagrams, figures, graphs, equations and narrative descriptions, and the requirement is that you can move between those forms. The CED does not prescribe drawing conventions for a motion map, so no single layout is official, and the exam will not ask you to define the term.
How they are normally drawn. Dots or sketches of the object at equal time intervals, laid out along the path. Even spacing means constant velocity. Spacing that grows means speeding up, and spacing that shrinks means slowing down. Velocity arrows at each dot make the direction explicit, which matters when an object reverses and the dots overlap.
The skill being tested is translation. A motion map with widening gaps, a position graph curving upward, a velocity graph with positive slope and a sentence saying the cart accelerates down the ramp are four representations of one situation.
